Enhancements / Upgrades ...

Spring of 2002 ...

major changes were made to the common room (kitchen, dining & living room) of the main cottage. The wall facing the lake is now virtually a wall of glass with a patio door and an additional glass panel. Combining this with cathedral ceilings in the common room (and bedroom) makes the room very bright and airy and you can now better enjoy the Canadian outdoors while inside. The bedroom wall facing the lake already had a patio door so while you are lying in bed you can enjoy the view of the lake.

Spring of 2006 ...

we replaced the two patio doors facing the lake, added an air conditioner, a shower to the bathroom, DVD players (for main cottage & bunky), bottled water dispenser (water provided), and upgraded the satellite service to 200+ TV channels and 90+ radio channels/stations.

Spring of 2007 ...

we upgraded the satellite receivers (main cottage & bunky) and are just redoing the outside in pine - see photo. In addition to our "fleet" of canoes, row boats and paddle boats we added cottage kayaks - naturally, the use of all is complimentary. In May of 2007, we also started our Partner Discount program so our clients get discounts at various local businesses and services; i.e. golf (15% off), spa treatments (10% off), horseback riding, family river rafting, theatre, etc - see sample coupons for full details.

Together; but, your own space...

Island View is our only two building cottage with both buildings private as they are set off from the other cottages. The main building consists of the common room (kitchen, living and dining room) plus the main bedroom and a bathroom (4 piece). The bunky, about 50 feet away, has the 2nd bedroom and bathroom (2 piece). Both have their own refrigerator, satellite TV, DVD player and VCR. This "together; but, apart" set-up appeals to a couple with older children or two couples. Note: Island View can be rented as a 1 bedroom (i.e. without bunky) or a 2 bedroom (with bunky).

The main cottage- Complete in itself...

Of our six cottages (on 20+ acres), the main cottage of Island View is the 2nd most compact - only 3 rooms - bedroom, bathroom and combined kitchen, dining and living room. The living space is expanded with a deck on the lake side with direct access via patio doors in the common room and the bedroom.

It has a 3 piece bathroom - toilet, bath tub and vanity sink. The room is paneled in natural pine which gives a very warm look. A shower was added to the bathroom in 2006 - this does not show up in the bathroom picture as that picture is from an earlier date. If you want to do some laundry, central facilities (washer and dryer) are available - as always usage is complimentary Please bring your own beach towels and toiletries.

The main room acts as kitchen, dining and living room. With patio doors facing the lake and several other windows, the room is bright and airy.

The kitchen has oak cupboards, fridge, stove/range, microwave, coffee maker, and toaster and is equipped with pots and pans, utensils, dishes and silverware. Being on vacation, most people do a great deal of the cooking on the provided gas barbeque (gas supplied).


For your entertainment...

For your entertainment, the main cottage and the bunky each have a TV, VCR and DVD player, with individual satellite connections providing both television (200+ channels) and radio/music (90+ channels/stations) so you can watch one channel in the main cottage and a different one in the bunky. There is a limited library of videos and books to supplement those that you may bring with you. As Blue Moon Retreat is a small, friendly place, within a short while you will probably be able to extend the available selection by swapping with one of the neighbours. Decks of cards and board games are also provided.

Two bedrooms plus a sofa bed...

We are often told by our guests "..it was so quiet and the bed was so comfortable, we all slept like logs..". If you decide to stay with us, we hope that you will have a similar experience. The bedroom in the main cottage has a patio door opening unto the lakeside deck. As the bedroom is somewhat compact, we are only able to provide a double bed. Additional sleeping space in the main cottage is possible with a sofa bed in the common room of the main cottage. We do caution you however, that with the sofa bed opened right up movement is somewhat restricted. There are two single beds in the bunky. With all the amenities (TV, VCR, DVD player, satellite connection, 2 piece bath) this becomes somewhat of a comfortable nest.

Depending on the time of year either a duvet or comforter is provided (naturally, along with all the linens.) for the beds and the sofa bed.

Enjoy the outdoors...

One of the joys of being at the cottage is enjoying the outdoors. We hope that the deck, your own fire pit (with free firewood), comfortable outdoor furniture (picnic table and lawn furniture) help in this important area. Fran and I stayed in Island View in 2006 and quite enjoyed watching the rabbits and chipmunks play in the morning sunlight on the south side of the cottage; while on the hot afternoons we enjoyed the shade from the large trees.

Use the provided canoes, row boats, cottage kayaks or, pedal boats for fishing (fishing equipment not provided) or exploring the island or perhaps you might like swimming from the rafts, playing horseshoes, badminton, beach volleyball or tennis. Sunsets over the lake can be quite breathtaking and many guests like to sit at the docks or beside the lake for this (with over 1,500 feet of lake frontage, there is no problem in getting a good vantage point).

Open May through Thanksgiving...

Island View is only available from May (the best time to see moose in Algonquin Park) through Thanksgiving (just after the magnificent fall colors and related studio tours). As the spring and fall nights can be cool, the cottage is all insulated and has electric heat. The 8 person hot tub and cedar lined sauna at the Wellness Centre are always popular; but, especially so in the cooler shoulder seasons. For the hot summer days, Island View has ceiling fans and an air conditioner.
